A familiar face will be in the dugout when Wanderers return to League One action against Shrewsbury.

Matt Taylor, who spent three-and-a-half-years at Bolton as a player, took charge of the Shropshire club over the summer, succeeding Steve Cotterill in the hot seat.

Taylor’s side are currently 18th in the table and ran out 3-2 winners against Colchester in the FA Cup first round over the weekend thanks to goals from Dan Udoh, Jordan Shipley and Elliot Thorpe.

The Shrewsbury boss felt there were positives to take from their performance but insists his players must be ready for the visit of the Whites as the fixtures come thick and fast.

“I am pleased for the players, but you’ve also got to remember that we go again here on Tuesday,” he told the club website.

“We started the game really well but conceded from their first attempt on goal. What I liked is the players didn’t give in, they didn’t lose belief. They kept going.

“We scored a really good goal to equalise. I spoke to the players at half-time, I didn’t feel our decision-making in and around the opposition’s box was at the level it can be.

“Second half, the challenge was to go out there and make better decisions and we did that. We should have scored more than the three, we’ve had 17 shots and only hit the target six times which isn’t good enough.

“But the aim of the beginning of the day was to be in the hat for the next round of the cup. Ultimately, we have fulfilled that.”

Thorpe made his debut following a spell out of action due to injury, and Taylor was encouraged by what he saw from the Luton loanee.

“He has fully committed to his rehab,” the manager continued. “He has worked really hard. We put him in a position that the fans might not have expected in that number 10.

“But Elliot, having known him, grew up as a midfielder. He understands that position and we just felt with the threat that was being caused out wide, Tunmise (Sobowale), would give us real one-v-one dominance.

“I’m pleased that Elliot has got on and made his debut. It’s now a case of preparing for Bolton.”

Wanderers came out on top when the sides last met in April, with Josh Sheehan getting the decisive goal.

The Whites were beaten 3-2 on their last trip to Shropshire despite a brace from Charles either side of half time.
