Former Wanderers defender Paul Robinson has made a surprise return to the pitch at grassroots level.

Robinson joined the Whites in 2009, initially on a loan deal from West Brom before making the move permanent several months later.

The defender went on to make more than 80 appearances during a three-year stay at the club, also spending time on loan at Leeds.

He was released following relegation from the Premier League in 2012 and headed to Birmingham, where he would spend the next six years before hanging up his boots.

Robinson recently departed Millwall after spending two-and-a-half-years as first-team coach at the Den, where he worked alongside Gary Rowett.

The 44-year-old turned out for Claverdon in the Birmingham & District League over the weekend, according to Express & Star.

He is planning to play regularly for the side while he prepares for his next opportunity in the professional game.

“It was really good, it is not at the levels I used to play so my body can cope with it,” he told Baggies Broadcast.

"It'll be every other week unless they keep dragging me in, but I enjoyed it and it is an opportunity to play with one of my sons.

“I'd like to do the same with all of them. It was a great lifetime experience and a great joy to grace the same pitch."

Robinson also outlined his ambitions to head into management. He made a positive impact while working with the first-team squad at the Den.

“The impact of his work will be felt by the players he worked with closely for the rest of their careers, and no doubt the staff at Calmont Road too,” said Millwall director of football operations Alex Aldridge earlier this month.

“Paul has a long coaching career ahead of him and we wish him the very best for the future.”
