WANDERERS (3-5-2).

JOEL COLEMAN…6.5.

Had to stay alert with a couple of crosses and headers dropping dangerously close to his goal and tried to keep things moving in possession.

WILL FORRESTER…6.5.

Came up with a few important clearances against his former club and spent a lot of his time pushing on in support of Dacres-Cogley on the right.

EOIN TOAL…7.

Very composed 90 minutes for a young defender who has really stepped up a level this season. Captain for the day and suits the responsibility.

JACK IREDALE…6.5.

Back as a left-sided centre-half and his range of passing helped open things up for Wanderers. Worked hard to keep Vale at bay.

JOSH DACRES-COGLEY…6.5.

Probably guilty of being too unselfish at times but continually got into good positions in the penalty box and looked full of running.

AARON MORLEY…6.5.

Moved the ball around well and picked out a few lovely passes before being brought off at half time.

KYLE DEMPSEY…7.

Really set a good tempo in the first half an hour of the game and created the first goal for Charles with a barnstorming run.

PARIS MAGHOMA…6.5.

Took a while to warm up but Vale were struggling to deal with him once he had got into the game. Great to watch when he is running at defenders.

ZAC ASHWORTH…6.5.

Back in the starting line-up for the first time since August and didn’t really miss a beat, not wasting possession and involved in the second.

DION CHARLES…7.

Warmed up nicely for Portsmouth with his 14th of the season and involved in the second goal for Mendes Gomes too.

VICTOR ADEBOYEJO…7.

Faced with some physical markers he more than held his own and was heavily involved in the build up for both goals.

Subs: Thomason 6, 46 (for Dempsey) – Unjustly booked, and will miss the next round as a result. Worked hard.

Sheehan 6, 46 (for Maghoma) – Nice and tidy.

Gomes 7.5, 46 (for Morley) – Looked really dangerous. Good to see him back.

Nlundulu 72 (for Charles), Jerome 72 (for Adeboyejo).

Not used: Williams.

Port Vale (3-4-1-2): Leutwiler; Balmer, Iacovitti, Debrah; Grant, Conlon, Walters, Massey; Chislett; Loft, Ikpeazu.

Subs: Shorrock 46 (for Grant), Cass 61 (for Balmer), Garrity 69 (for Loft), Lomax 69 (for Ikpeazu), Dieppa 69 (for Massey) Not used: Ripley, Ojo.

Referee: Matt Corlett 6/10 – The retaken penalty felt extraneous, especially as Port Vale’s players encroached on the second one too. Thomason’s yellow looked very soft indeed but no major gripes in the end for one of the EFL’s new refs.
