Luton winger Andros Townsend has signed a new long-term contract ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Wanderers.

The former Tottenham and Everton man joined the Hatters on a free transfer in the summer and has made a positive impact at Kenilworth Road over the past few months, scoring in a 1-0 victory against Newcastle.

Townsend, who trained with Burnley in pre-season but failed to secure a contract with the Clarets, faced an uncertain future before he was handed a lifeline by Luton.

“Three months ago I thought my career was over,” he told the club’s official website. “From going to begging around the world for a trial to being offered a longer contract is a dream come true.

“It is a special, special football club. I think we can really achieve something special this season. It is only halfway done, we have got six months – 19 games – to pull off the unthinkable.”

Rob Edwards hailed Townsend’s attitude and believes the wideman’s experience has had a big impact on the squad.

“It is an amazing signing for us, Andros has come into the group with real humility and professionalism," he added.

“He has shown the whole group what it means to be elite and a top-end pro. His fitness levels have been insane, and he has shown more and more his qualities with every game.

“For us to be able to tie him down to a longer-term contract is a credit to him. He has been through a tough time and it says a lot about him as a person.

“I also think it says a lot about the ambitions of this football club that we are signing people like Andros, with his level and quality, so it is a big signing for us.”

Luton enter their clash with Wanderers on the back of a 3-2 defeat against Chelsea despite goals from Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo.
