A footballer based in Bolton is raising funds to represent the Wales Deaf team at the European Championships in Turkey this summer.

Nicholas Lewis, a goalkeeper, was born in Wales and now plays for the Radcliffe Deaf team. He is hoping to raise £1,000 through his JustGiving page so that he can take part in a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

The competition takes place from Saturday, June 1 to Friday, June 14 and Izmir has been chosen as the host city.

Nicholas wrote: "I have been chosen to proudly represent Wales Deaf at the upcoming 2024 Turkey Euros, a once in a lifetime opportunity that transcends the ordinary.

"But I cannot make this journey alone. I need your support, your belief, and your generosity to turn this dream into a reality.

"The deaf community has fought for visibility and recognition for years. This isn't just a football match for me, it's a chance to break down walls and show the world the sheer talent, dedication and determination that reside within Wales Deaf athletes.

"By contributing to this cause, you're not merely funding a trip. You're becoming an integral part of a movement, a narrative that celebrates inclusivity and empowers those whose voices often go unheard.

"Your donation, no matter the size, holds immense power. It signifies belief in the capability of individuals who strive for excellence despite facing societal barriers.

“Your generosity will directly fuel the journey of a team striving to conquer obstacles and showcase their unparalleled skills on a global stage.”

Donations will go towards transport, accommodation and equipment as the team aims to continue its rapid development.

Wales Deaf was launched in 2023 and in a short space of time, they have gone from holding training sessions at a park in Cardiff to receiving access to the FAW’s Dragon Park facility.
