After drying out from the wetlands of Cambridge, the White Army descended upon Sixfields to face the Cobblers of Northampton.

Those fans who risked travelling by rail, complained of a magical mystery tour of cancellations, diversions, and delays. Happily, I enjoyed a smooth coach trip with a pit stop at Norton Canes for a chippy lunch.

Over a pint of Wainwright’s, everybody had their tales of survival from the deluge on Tuesday night. Personally, we dried out in the Cambridge United Supporters’ Club after the match, enjoying a chat with their fans, listening to the demise of Peterborough at Exeter. Most fans were hopeful of getting something at Northampton as we need to build momentum and keep the points coming in, for the final push for automatic promotion. Joel Coleman came in for the injured Nathan Baxter, while Ian Evatt stuck with Victor Adeboyejo and Dion Charles up front with Aaron Collins on the bench.

Our first-half display was awful. A goal down inside two minutes, a man sent off within 27 and our manager sent off at half time. We were second best all round, though poor refereeing and Oscar-worthy performance from the Cobblers did not help. But we have got to expect this and find ways to overcome it.

In the second half, we came out fired up and really gave it a go. Carlos Mendes Gomes was the hero with his headed equaliser, but we could have won it, hitting the post and the bar and creating an almighty scramble with at least four shots blocked on the line. In the end, there was much relief we had salvaged a point from a dire situation.

Whatever the merits of the two red cards, both the player and manager should not have put themselves in that position, nor given the referee a decision to make.

There are 17 cup finals to go now and every team will do their best to stop us, in any way they feel will work. All teams have targets of their own.

We cannot complain of League One referees, just as the standard of football is lower at this level, so is the standard of refereeing, with the odd exception.

Two home matches to come this week, so let’s keep the points building.
