WANDERERS (3-5-2).

JOEL COLEMAN…7.

The manner of Cambridge’s opening goal could have been a confidence sapper for the Wanderers keeper but he came up with one big save and a couple of important claims thereafter.

GETHIN JONES…7.5.

This was a night where you had to put your head in where it hurts. And Jones won more in the air than anyone else. Tried to get things moving in possession too.

CALEB TAYLOR…6.

Desperately unlucky to pick up a nasty ankle injury after what had been his best 40 minutes for Bolton so far.

EOIN TOAL…7.

Did improve as the game went on, especially after Iredale’s arrival on the left. Another one who won plenty in the air from Cambridge’s never-ending long throws.

JOSH DACRES-COGLEY…6.

After struggling to make a dent in the first 45, he got more involved after the break and went close to grabbing a third for Bolton with a belting shot.

PARIS MAGHOMA…7.

Saturday had been a step forward and after a quiet first half Maghoma resumed that progress. Grabbed a goal but also got the Whites moving in the opposition half.

JOSH SHEEHAN…8.5.

Bossed the midfield for the vast majority of the game and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet too. That assist for Mendes Gomes was just superb.

KYLE DEMPSEY…7.

Rarely drops a gear and kept on driving at Cambridge even when things were not really going in his favour.

NAT OGBETA…6.5.

Struggled first half – and he could probably have done more to stop Kaikai progress for the Cambridge goal but his second half display showed some real character.

JON DADI BODVARSSON…6.5.

But for some brave defending and some good goalkeeping he would have had a third goal in as many games. Not quite the headline grabber but a solid show.

CARLOS MENDES GOMES…7.5.

You won’t see many better finishes than that for Bolton this season. Great way to cap his first league start for the club.

Subs: Iredale 7, 40 (for Taylor) – Made a difference on the left side of defence.

Morley 72 (for Maghoma), Collins 78 (for Mendes Gomes), Adeboyejo 78 (for Bodvarsson).

Not used: Forrester, Ramsay, Jerome.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Josh Sheehan.

Never wasted the ball, always looked to take it on, and provided an international class pass for Mendes Gomes’s winner. Sheehan-esta indeed.

MOAN OF THE MATCH – Wanderers are showing resilience, sure, but if they could show it a little earlier it might make for an easier viewing experience.

MAGIC MOMENT – Sheehan’s vision, Mendes Gomes’s sublime volley. A wonderful moment to reward the travelling fans.

Cambridge United (3-5-2): Stevens; L Bennett, R Bennett, Morrison, Andrew; Digby, Cousins; Brophy, Kachunga, Kaikai; Bonne.

Subs: Thomas 70 (for Digby), Lankester 70 (for Kaikai), Taylor 70 (for Kachunga), Gibbons 82 (for L Bennett).

Not used: Mannion, Rossi, May.

Referee: David Rock 7/10 – There were some confusing moments. The foul on Taylor was one of them. But he also made some pretty brave calls in the circumstances and got the biggest calls right.

Attendance: 6,525.
