Bolton Rugby Club’s mixed ability side, the Buccaneers, had a fine result when they beat Halifax Magpies 33-7 at Avenue Street last Saturday.
As the heavens opened, the gathered masses assembled on Buccaneer Hill to see a very tight first period.
The two teams were very closely matched with some great competitive mixed ability rugby on show, and the referee had to keep his eyes open as both teams played on the edge.
Bolton pushed in front as they managed to capitalise on chances that came their way.
Man-of-the-match Matty Brennan scored the try of the game, as well as slotting home a number of conversions.
Other try scorers for the hosts were Tom Bramwell, Karl Jacques and Stuart Latchford (two), while conversions came from Russ Walton and Brennan (three).
The real winner of the day, though, was the spirit in which the game was played - brilliant sportsmanship, lots of fun, great rugby and camaraderie between the two sides.
This continued into the clubhouse for post-match presentations and celebrations that went well into the evening.
Next up, the Buccaneers travel over to Yorkshire for the return fixture against in just under two weeks’ time.
