Wanderers youngster Nelson Khumbeni is getting valuable experience under his belt as Morecambe look to break into the League Two play-off places.

Khumbeni joined the Shrimps on loan on Deadline Day and has started eight successive matches in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old midfielder had a stint at AFC Fylde during the first half of the campaign along with Bolton team-mate Max Conway. He also featured against Manchester United Under-21s in the EFL Trophy group stage, getting on the scoresheet that night.

Morecambe are up to eighth in the table following back-to-back victories against Crawley and Crewe Alexandra.

Ged Brannan’s side are only behind seventh-place Walsall on goal difference heading into the business campaign.

Khumbeni was one of several players to arrive at the Mazuma Stadium in the January window but says he was quickly made to feel at home.

Last month, he told BBC Radio Lancashire: “The changing room is good, it feels like a bit of a family.

“We are spending a lot of time together, probably more than you do with your families. You start to gel quickly and it makes it so much easier, especially as a new lad.

“It has been fantastic, it is every footballer’s dream to get in and play as many games as possible. The lads have put good performances in and credit to them.”

Morecambe have a tough fixture coming up this weekend when they welcome third-place Wrexham to the Mazuma Stadium.

Phil Parkinson’s side are only outside the top two on goal difference as they aim to achieve back-to-back promotions.

“He knows he will be in for a hard game because we have got big hearts, we throw ourselves in front of the ball to avoid conceding goals and we are a good unit," said Brannan. "They better be on their toes.”
