Success was abundant this week as Burnden Road Runners gathered on the track to peg five miles around Pennington Flash, with Michael Kermode leading the club home.

The event is Leigh Harriers Athletics Club’s entry for the Central Lancs Grand Prix League and starts from the stomping ground of gold medal winner, Keely Hodgkinson.

The route takes runners through the woods and around the Flash on an undulating course.

Kermode clocked 33mins 1secs and snapping on his heels was Lee White (second MV50) in 33:16, and Steve Nolan followed as third BRR but scooped first MV60, in 34:37.

Mark Cannon was third MV60, in 35:49, and Marcus Hamer was second MV65, in 38:49. Paul Christie took third MV70, in 43:25.

Ladies were back in a flash with Gwen Kinloch first Burndener, and first FV60, in 37:45, and Lyndsay Darbyshire second for the club and first FV55, in 38:08. Vicki Hamer was third BRR, in 40:34. Gayle Gerrard was second FV50, in 40:42, and Linda Doherty was third FV50, in 41:12, while Anne Ferguson was crowned first FV65, in 41:20.

Melissa Husbands embarked on an epic adventure as she survived a marathon on the Pennines.

Self-proclaimed as the ‘Holy Grail of the Pennine’s Peaks, Pines and Trails’, the race is a young one, first born in 2022, and it raises money for the local area via several charities.

Husbands said: “It was a terrifically challenging 27.1-mile multi-terrain course that provided several punishing climbs along the 3,814 feet elevation route.

“But we were rewarded with stunning surroundings and glorious views.

“It was a test of mental and physical endurance, yet six hours 20 minutes of fabulous fun.”

A duo of Burndeners, Bernie Jones and Martin Archer, were out to support Matt Smith’s Charity Run in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association - the Smithy’s 5 Mile Trail.

The race is a favourite among members and previously raised money for Bolton Hospice, in March.

The scenic route is a challenge, although it is accessible for all fitness levels – Smith’s aim being to welcome everybody and to raise funds.

Archer crossed the line in 49:53 and Jones in 49:54.

The club’s annual pilgrimage to Edge Hill University to take part in the West Lancs Summer Sprint Triathlon did not disappoint last weekend.

A total of 15 individuals and one relay team took part - a record club attendance for this hugely popular North West race.

The event is based around the university campus and occurs twice a year, with a 16-length pool swim, approximately 13-mile fast cycle route around the Ormskirk countryside and a 5k flat run around the Ormskirk Parkrun course, finishing on the university running track.

The first man to finish for Burnden Tri was Martin Fielding in a blistering time of 1:13:33 for 26th in his age category out of 115.

Burnden’s first lady was Francesca Caine, achieving her course personal-best time of 1:29:46, shaving five minutes off last year’s performance. Meanwhile, Joanna Fielding and Jen Entwistle completed their first triathlons.
