Interim head coach Tom Cunniff is pleased that Wanderers Women are showing different ways to win ahead of the FA Cup first round proper this weekend.
Bolton beat Bury 2-0 last weekend, overcoming the torrential conditions at Gigg Lane thanks to goals from Poppy Wallis and Zara Plano.
The result leaves Wanderers third in the table, four points off second-place Mancunian Unity, heading into the busy winter months.
“It was very difficult,” Cunniff told the club. “In football, that happens sometimes but we dug in, fought for each other and got the goals at the right time, we defended really well.
“Bury are an organised, aggressive pressing team and we dealt with it for the majority of the game and came away with a good win. Now, lots to work on this week.
“It is good to see that when we need to dig in, we can. We have a young team so they are still learning.
“Sometimes when things aren’t going our way, we have to find other ways of winning games and we did that.
“A lot of effort from the players but also game understanding - knowing when to cover, when to drive the team up, motivate and encourage.”
Wanderers have now kept back-to-back clean sheets and Cunniff says it is an important base to build from.
“It is something we have been working on in the last few weeks, making it difficult to concede,” he added.
“Our first priority is not conceding goals and you have seen that in the last couple of weeks, with back-to-back clean sheets and Anabelle (White) making some really important saves, but the back three in front of her were really impressive.”
Attention now turns back to the FA Cup after Bolton overcame Chester and Rutherford to reach the first round proper.
“It will be a similar week,” said Cunniff. “We will enjoy the win, recover and then crack on from Tuesday preparing for Ponteland in the FA Cup on Sunday.
“We look forward to it. There is lots to work on but we have learnt a lot about ourselves and the squad.”
