Daisy Hill are throwing open their turnstiles and inviting spectators to enjoy a game free of charge, when they host Holker Old Boys in the North West Counties League First Division North tomorrow (3pm).

The club are staging a Community Day, with representatives from local community groups and junior football clubs in attendance at the Ginge Power Stadium, and with Bolton Wanderers playing at Wimbledon in a lunchtime kick off on Saturday, Daisy Hill manager and former Wanderers defender Nicky Hunt is hoping free admission to the game will attract fans who are looking for some live football action.

“It would be absolutely magnificent if we got a good crowd down on Saturday,” said Hunt.

“The message to everyone is, come down and have a nice day, watch good full of energy football being played and hopefully we can get the three points.

“There’s a lot of good players in our league. and especially the league above, and a lot of people don’t realise that. It’s not about long-ball football and big six foot six players, not at all.

“There’s a lot of technical players, a lot of tactics involved, a lot of preparation goes into games and you’ll see that if you come down.

“When we play, you’re usually guaranteed goals and chances, and Holker are the same. So whether you are a neutral, a local fan or a Daisy Hill fan, come down and get free admission, buy a couple of drinks, and one of Colin’s pies too, and hopefully you’ll see enough to want to come again after Saturday.”

Daisy are looking for a much-needed win to boost their hopes off moving nearer to the play-off places, but in recent weeks have been frustrated by the weather, with a number of games being called off.

However, Daisy boss Hunt is philosophical about the disrupted schedule.

He added: “You’re trying to build momentum from good results, but a lot of the teams in our division have not got any momentum because of the games that they’ve had called off, so it’s the same for everyone, we are all in the same boat. So there’s no real cause for concern, as such, everyone’s just got to get on with it.

“We’ve just got to crack on, and on Saturday get back playing after what was a really, really top performance last weekend against a good Droylsden team, where I feel we didn’t get what we deserved.”

This weekend’s opponents, Holker Old Boys, make the trip south just 11 days after the two sides met in Cumbria, and fought out a 2-2 draw, but Hunt believes that game will not necessarily have a bearing on how the match plays out at the Ginge Power Stadium.

He said: “We have watched Holker both home and away and we know they have two or three different players in the team when they play away, compared to the side they play at home, so we will have to deal with that.

“But we should be on a high after the performance at Holker. and then the performance at Droylsden.

“We should be quietly confident of going into any game against anyone in this league, knowing that we can match anyone, and it’s all about who turns up on the day.

“If we turn up, we’ll get the result we want and if we don’t turn up, we’ll have a tough day.”
