Daisy Hill manager Nicky Hunt is challenging his side to keep their recent good form going when they travel to face Garstang tonight in the North West Counties League First Division North.
Two wins and a draw in the past three games, scoring 11 goals in the process, has moved Daisy to within six points of the promotion play-off places, and Hunt believes the work he has done in rebuilding the squad since his arrival last September is now starting to pay dividends.
“The mentality of the team has improved since I’ve been here, and it’s taken three or four months to get it to where it’s at now,” said the Daisy boss. “Having a bit of confidence and a bit of pride in what you’re doing is what we’re all about, and believing that you can go and win a game.
“We’re not getting complacent, we’re not getting cocky, and we’re not getting too big for our boots, but sometimes going into a game thinking that you’re going to win is good for you. That’s what I’ve to tried to instil in the squad, and it showed in these past two games, and we need to keep that going on Wednesday.”
Garstang sit second bottom and have won just once in their last five games. However, they have lost just two of nine home league outings so far this season, and Hunt is wary of the challenge they will pose.
“Garstang will be no pushovers, I’m certain about that,” said Hunt. “But if we play like we did in the last two games (against AFC Blackpool) we are a match for anyone in this league.
“For the last 11 games, we have to focus on us. When we start worrying about the opposition, that’s when we can become a bit unstuck.
“We probably need to win eight or nine of those remaining games to get into the play-offs, and it’s a tough ask for any team in any league to pick up eight wins on the bounce. But we’ve put ourselves in great stead by winning two games last week.
“We’ve now got three big games in five days, starting on Wednesday night and then games at Darwen on Saturday and at home to Ashton Town the following Monday, and we need to go into those with the belief we showed last week.”
