Wanderers Women are hungry to finish the campaign on a high note against champions AFY Fylde – and head coach Tom Cunniff hopes to follow in their footsteps next season.
Regardless of this weekend’s result, the Whites are guaranteed to finish third in their first season in tier five.
Cunniff views it is a ‘free hit’ against Fylde and wants his side to express themselves against opponents who have won 15 of their 16 league fixtures to date.
“We love to play against harder opposition,” he told the club channels. “Obviously, we want to test ourselves and see where we’re at right now.
“Fylde are a superb team that we want to try and match one day, and hopefully that is the goal leading forward.
“We have told the team that it’s a bit of a free hit this weekend in terms of trying to work on what we’ve been doing in training, trying to get the three points as best we can, but expressing ourselves and enjoying this last game.
“It has been a tough season for us but one we have really enjoyed. We will take it into next season full of promise and we’re really proud of this team.
“Of course, that is our aim – to be in their position this time next year. We know we are capable of doing that, especially with some experience that the team has gained this year.
“Fylde have proven this year that they deserve to win the league and hopefully that will be us next year.”
It has been another year of progress for Wanderers Women and Cunniff believes there are plenty of positives to build on next season.
“We knew it would be tough this year with the step up after getting promoted last year,” he added. “To finish third with only Fylde and (Mancunian) Unity ahead of us is something we should be really proud of and try to kick on from next season.
“Some stuff is already in progress for next season, which is exciting. The players are excited to get going already, but they do need that little break.
“As soon as Sunday is done, as staff we will sit down, start straight away and hopefully come back to pre-season fully ready to go.”
