Tom Cunniff is proud of Wanderers Women for finishing third in their first season in tier five – and believes exciting times are ahead.

Cunniff took charge in October following Myles Smith’s departure, initially on an interim basis before earning the role permanently.

Bolton were beaten by champions Fylde on the final day, and the head coach is hungry to follow in their footsteps next season.

“It has been a difficult season in terms of circumstances changing through the season, but the players have been brilliant throughout,” he told the club channels.

“They have given everything they have got and they believe in what we are trying to achieve here. I think finishing third in our first season is an amazing achievement and one we’re really proud of. It gives us that aim now to kick on to even better things next season.”

Cunniff added: “We will have a break, I think that is really important for the players. Then we will come in for a big pre-season, which is very important for us, and we aim to win the league next year.”

Despite losing 4-0 at Fylde, Cunniff took encouragement as his side matched the champions for spells before their quality eventually shone through.

“A very tough afternoon,” he reflected. “I think we started the game positively and the first half was quite even. Second half, we dropped off a little bit and Fylde showed their quality.

“That is what we are aiming for next season. We know Fylde are a good team and in parts we matched them, but overall they just had a little bit too much on the day.

“Going in after just conceding is disappointing. We still felt like we were in the game at that point, we were positive into the second half.

“But I think we got overrun a little bit in the second half and didn’t seem to have enough, but it has been a long season and that is to be expected. And obviously Fylde are a great team, like I said they showed their quality.”

The head coach also hailed the supporters, who have stuck by the team throughout plenty of highs and lows.

“We want to thank them for showing up every single week,” he said. “We are really grateful for it and couldn’t do it without them. We ask them to do it again next season and some exciting things coming.”
