Jack Wilshere insists that his Luton Town side must be fully focused on what they can control at Wanderers as they aim to break into the top six on the final day.
The Hatters are a point behind sixth-place Stevenage after a run of 11 games unbeaten in all competitions.
Wilshere praised his players for their attitude in recent weeks and says they must be ready to pounce if any of the sides above them slip up.
“No matter what happens, we need to make sure that we take care of our business, which we have done. The players have been excellent at that,” he told BBC Three Counties.
“Of course, the elephant in the room is that we are chasing. The closer you get to that and the less games there are to play, the more you look at (results elsewhere).
“But part of that is making sure we are focused and getting our job done because that is all we can control.
“If someone slips up, we have to be ready to step in and we have given ourselves the best chance of doing that.”
Luton kept their top six hopes alive with a 2-1 win against Barnsley last weekend after goals from Nahki Wells and Kasey Palmer.
“At this stage of the season it’s about winning, and I had that feeling we were going to find something as I think the team’s really developed that,” Wilshere added.
“We want to still play well and still perform because we believe that’s the best way of winning a game and we’ve done that really well recently, but I didn’t think we found our rhythm.
“We threatened at times, but couldn’t quite keep our foot on the gas with that and I always felt that if we can suffer in those moments where they’re putting us under pressure, then we defended really well.
“More importantly I felt like the players believe that we can still find something from somewhere when you’ve got quality on the pitch and we certainly did that.”
The Hatters are waiting on the fitness of top-scorer Jordan Clark, who has 12 goals to his name in all competitions this season.
Clark has missed the past three games with a calf problem. The midfielder issued an update on his condition at the Supporters’ Trust awards night on Tuesday.
“I’ve done a little bit of running with the physios and the fitness guys, so I’m touching all the wood I can at the minute,” he said.
“I felt OK today. Thursday, Friday, I’ll hopefully be joining in a little bit of teamwork and tactical stuff, so hopefully I feel good again and can put myself forward for selection.”
