A young boxer from Bolton is making a name for himself in the sport after winning the prestigious Capital Cup London title.
Mohammad Shah Hussain is only 18 but is rising rapidly after little more than three years in boxing.
The former student from Mount St Joseph School, where he achieved very strong GCSE results, has shown the discipline in the ring as he has done academically, progressing rapidly in only three and a half years.
Raised in Great Lever, Mohammad now fights out of the Islington Boxing Club in north London after originally starting as a young fighter at Apollo in Bolton.
And the move south to one of the country’s top clubs has paid off.
The teenager is now number one in his weight division of 57kg.
In the Capital Cup tournament, Mohammad faced very tough opponents throughout and had to fight back-to-back, day after day, to win the title - his first.
Each bout tested his discipline, fitness and mental strength, but Mohammad kept pushing forward and showed real character under pressure.
Winning the title was not just one good performance, it was the result of several hard fights against strong opposition over consecutive days.
His next goal is to win the National Development Championships, and his long-term dream is to one day represent Team GB.
His coach in London, Kofi Blaq, has been impressed with his development and said: “His philosophy is much like Bruce Lee spoke of - being formless, adaptable and capable of directing yourself to victory.
“For Mohammad, adapting this philosophy will make him very hard to beat because he is faster than anyone.
“He has fast feet, fast hands and, together with technique, Mohammad will be a fine boxer if he maintains his trajectory.”
This success is a very proud moment for Mohammad and his family.
His mother, Ambreen Imtiaz, has sacrificed a lot to support his move and his boxing journey, and Mohammad really appreciates everything she has done for him.
He is also very grateful for the support of his family and wants to continue working hard to make Bolton proud.
The family said: “We are extremely proud of Mohammad.
“He has worked very hard in such a short space of time, and this achievement shows his discipline, dedication and talent.”
Mum Ambreen added: “I’m very proud of him.
“The struggles he has been through, it’s all his hard work.
“I hope he finally gets a sponsor, which he really needs to take the next steps and make his country proud.”
