BOXING: Scott Quigg underlined his claim for a shot at the British super-bantamweight title with a convincing ninth-round stoppage of Redcar’s Gavin Reid at the Bolton Arena last night.
The 21-year-old from Bury gave a mature performance and was a comfortable winner.
Plucky Reid stood toe to toe with Quigg in the early rounds and proved a worthy opponent but the Bury man, who has now won all 19 of his professional fights – 12 by knockouts – was just too good for him and the sheer volume of punches finally told on Reid, who had blood pouring from his left eye when the referee stepped in.
Although the bout was not an eliminator, the confident Quigg will still hope for a shot at the British title before the year is out.
Whitefield’s Rhys Roberts also won with a points victory over Mansfield’s Pavel Senkovs in a four-round super-bantamweight bout.
