RADCLIFFE Borough might be mathematically relegated now, but there is a new air of optimism sweeping through the club after Monday's impressive victory at the home of promotion chasing Fleetwood.

Boro ripped up the form book to record a 3-0 victory by the seaside, and manager Andy Johnston reckons the difference in the end result was down to one simple thing - goals!

"The only difference between Monday and some other displays where we have been beaten is that we managed to score and get our noses in front," said Johnston.

"Our performance against a top six side was impressive. We were far more clinical in front of goal and that leads to better defending.

"The lack of goals is something we want to rectify next season, and this victory is something for us to build on."

Striker Ian Fitzpatrick scored a brace against Fleetwood, and Johnston was full of praise for the former Droylsden hit-man.

"Fitzy was brilliant," said Johnston. "He did what we have brought him to the club to do. He hasn't done it often enough for us but in fairness he has had a lot of partners and we hope that all settles down next season.

"The victory gives all of the lads and supporters a boost and shows what we can do when we get that rub of the green.

"Our record against the top teams in the division is excellent this season and shows the potential of the players we have at the club."

Boro look to be heading for the dreaded drop, but they could yet be saved if there is any upheaval in the leagues above them that could have a trickle-down effect. Conference North sides Scarborough and Lancaster City are both struggling financially and could go out of business before the start of next season.

"We still have three games to play, and there is plenty to play for," said Johnston. "We might benefit from stuff in other leagues and we have to make sure we are in a position for that to happen.

"It'd also be nice to finish the season with a flourish and give the fans something to look forward to next season.

"The players are full of confidence after that win, and they are relaxed.

"We travel to Ossett tomorrow and we feel we should have beaten them at home so it would be nice to get another victory. We know their pitch is going to be horrendous but we have to deal with it and try and come out on top."

After the Ossett trip, Boro host Guiseley next Saturday before finishing their season with a trip to Ilkeston on April, 28.
