DOMINIC Telford reckons Bury’s belief could propel them all the way to Wembley after they reached the Checkatrade Trophy quarter-finals.
On Tuesday night the Shakers were 2-0 down at half time away to League One Accrington before launching a second-half fightback.
Telford scored twice to help Bury clinch a 4-2 win and reach the last eight for the first time since 2007/08.
The quarter-final draw will be made tonight, with the ties to be played the week commencing January 21.
“It was a good night for me and the rest of the lads,” said Telford. “We’ve got a good opportunity. We’re not far from Wembley now and we go into every game looking to win.
“With the belief we’ve got in the dressing room, it was never over for us. Even at 2-0 down, we’re backing ourselves because we know we’ll create chances, and we capitalised on that in the second half.”
Telford has been nicknamed ‘Checkatrade’ by his team-mates after becoming the top scorer in this season’s competition with six goals.
Tuesday night’s brace also took the 22-year-old from Clitheroe to 10 goals for the season.
“My first target was to be in double figures and I’m happy with that return at this stage of the season,” added the summer signing.
“I could have had more. The gaffer’s been on at me for striking the low ball instead of high, and I’m always critical of myself. But I’ll keep chipping away. I’m buzzing to be in double figures and we just need to kick on. We’ve got a big game on Saturday so the lads will prepare right and we’ll go into it confident.”
Bury are third in League Two after last Saturday’s win at Yeovil and this weekend welcome second-placed MK Dons to Gigg Lane.
