Hitting back, Colin Bell, an England hat-trick: Bury FC through the years

Two goals apiece for Glynn Hurst and Andy Bishop sent the Kent men packing and left the manager beaming with pride after the 4-0 win in November 2008.

“It was a great result,” said Knill. “The players were fantastic.

“I think the main thing we did today was do the basics right – head, tackle and compete.

“It’s a relief to get back to winning ways, and I have to say that the directors have been fantastic throughout this spell.

“They can see what we are trying to do and how we are trying to do it and they have been ever so supportive.

“I also have to say a big thank you to the staff around me. It’s not easy when you are getting beat, and you need to be picked up when you come into work, and they have done a really good job of that.”

Gillingham were demoralised, but they did have a chance to score a consolation when they were awarded a penalty for Wayne Brown’s foul on Mark McCammon.

The Bury keeper was fortunate to survive with only a yellow card, but there was nothing lucky about ‘Superman’s’ save from Adam Miller’s spot-kick.

This week in Shakers history

1899: Jimmy Settle scored a hat-trick on his England debut in a 13-2 rout of Ireland in the Home Nation Championships. The Cumberland-born inside-left won three caps while playing for the club over the next few months before moving on to Everton for a fee of £400 at the end of the season.

1946: On February 25, ex-Bury goalkeeper Neil Ramsbottom celebrates his 74th birthday. Signed as an apprentice, he made 174 appearances for the club.

1964: Teenager Colin Bell followed up his goal against Manchester City on his debut with the winner against Southampton at The Dell. He had been joined in the Shakers squad by new signing Brian Pilkington, a £25,000 buy from Bolton Wanderers.

1985: The Shakers beat Northampton Town 3-1 at Gigg Lane to keep up their promotion push in the centenary season. Gary Buckley, Craig Madden and Winnie White were on the scoresheet for Martin Dobson’s side.

Name that Shaker

THIS week’s mystery Shakers man is a real legend of Gigg Lane. One of only six players to have featured more than 400 time for the club, he is pictured here smiling for the cameras in the team shoot for the 1958/59 season.

The wing-half was a hugely popular player at Bury and also briefly played in the Football League for Oldham Athletic.
