FLYING winger Andy Haworth will get another chance to impress manager Alan Knill in the quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Gigg Lane tonight.

The 21-year-old, who was recruited from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, was drafted back into the starting line-up for Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Exeter City.

After spending a large part of the campaign on the bench, he is now champing at the bit to show what he can do.

“I wanted to change it about a bit on Saturday,” Knill said. “David Worrall has done really well for us but he has played nine games on the bounce and we are always thinking about burn-out in those wide areas.

“Andy Haworth has been waiting for his chance and he took it. He brought a great save out of the keeper, put in a few good crosses, and I am pleased for him.

“Andy is a fantastic dribbler of the ball and he is exciting to watch. But, as with all of the players, it counts for nothing unless there is something on the end of it.

“We are trying to work as hard as we can with him and he is a willing worker. We will gladly put in the hours on the training pitch with him.”

Haworth is likely to retain his place in the team against Tranmere, with Peter Sweeney, Lenny John-Lewis, Ben Futcher and Kyle Bennett also in line for a start.

“It is a squad game and burnout is an issue with a young squad,” said Knill. “That is what has cost us in the last few seasons.

“Those energy players, like Michael Jones and David Worrall, and Elliott Bennett before them, hit a wall and that is why we have recruited more wide players.

“That way, if the lads on the pitch need a rest, I can just pull them out of the team for a player that is equally as good.

“We have a few top-quality players on the bench and they need a game. They showed in the last round against Shrewsbury that they will not let me down.”

Defender Efe Sodje serves a one-match suspension tonight while Cameron Belford (fractured cheekbone) and Andy Bishop (tendonitis) remain on the sidelines for at least another month.
