HORWICH'S Nick Leigh and Phil Marsden were 14th and 20th respectively at the classic Three Peaks race in the Yorkshire Dales.

The pair also teamed up with Mick Walsh and Dan Gilbert to finish ninth place of 59 teams, while Leigh, Walsh and Gilbert’s results gave Horwich second place in the MV40 team competition, ahead of 20 other teams.

In the Area Fell Grand Prix, Horwich are looking to improve on their second place last year behind Rossendale and after the third race in the series at Saddleworth, the Harriers sit first following strong performances from Gary Chadderton, Doug Fleming and Lawrence Pinnell – stalwarts in last year’s success – and also an impressive V65 category win from Tony Hesketh.

Further north at Coniston, Simon Pymm continued his great run of form on the fells with 12th place.

Meanwhile in Yorkshire, 10 of Harriers’ junior athletes took part in the fourth round of the English junior fell running championships and consolidated the club’s 17th place of 37 clubs.

In the Forest of Bowland, Lindsey Brindle battled it out with three women for the best top-10 place and settled for 10th overall, while for the junior girls, Emma Bradley took the first under-11s' place.

In track and field, the junior athletes have had a very busy week, first at Whitehaven in the Youth Development League and then at the latest Trafford Open medal meeting.

Standout performances in the YDL match came from Niall Maloney on the track, winning the 100m and 200m, while in the field Sam Keenan won both the shot and javelin events.

In the younger age group Isaac Battye won the long jump while Isabella Merritt won the 150m sprint.

Merritt also had more success at the Trafford event where both she and Alistair Sharrock continued their multi-medal winning performances on the track.

Other fine individual performances saw Rob Jackson win another Northern Masters title, this time the 10k trail race, while in Horwich, Julian Goudge finished 10th in the annual Epic Events Triathlon.

In parkrun, u15s' Ella Pendlebury was second female home over the trail-like course at Pennington Flash in a time of 21mins 31secs.
