THIS week’s delve into The Bolton News picture archives has unearthed a photograph of Pennington Raiders Under-11s from May 1999.

The caption accompanying the picture says it was taken before a trip to Europe for the team who were sponsored by Greggs. Did you play for the team or do you recognise anyone in the line-up?

Do you have any memories of that game or how the team fared that year?

Email david.pye@nqnw.co.uk with any recollections.

THE second picture is a photograph of the Bolton Schoolboys team from March 1984 and was publiched in last week's sporting nostalgia section.

It evoked memories for several readers who emailed in their recollections.

Former Bolton town team coach Dave Price said: "The picture was of the BSFA U15s team before their ESFA Inter Association Trophy (the Schoolboys’ FA Cup) semi-final versus Sheffield SFA at Burnden Park in March 1984.

"Players of interest are Keith Hill (Canon Slade) who went on to a pro career at Blackburn Rovers and Plymouth Argyle, and is currently manager of Rochdale, Keith Welch (Sharples) who played for Rochdale and Bristol City and Jon Senior (Mount St Josephs) who played for Bolton Wanderers and Horwich RMI.

"Also in the squad were Paul Griffin (MSJ), Jon Conway (Canon Slade) – his dad Jim (ex-Celtic) was first-team coach and chief scout for Bolton Wanderers – and Ian Foster (Canon Slade) who my daughter Nicola, some years later, used to babysit for his children.

"Going into the game the town team, managed by Steve Cook (Bolton School), were undefeated and going strong in every competition we had entered.

"We lost the game 1-0 and Sheffield went on to win the two-legged final versus Swindon SFA.

"One unfortunate incident was that we scored a 'goal' when it was 0-0 but the only three people in the ground who did not see the ball had crossed the line were the match officials, and the referee, Mr Brandwood (Midlands), agonisingly waved play on.

"When I later joined the ESFA I often met up with Mr Brandwood officiating in schools’ town team or inter-county games and never failed to greet him with: “It was definitely a goal you know.”

"The defeat ended our unbeaten run and although the squad reached a couple of county finals, the 1983/84 season ended without any trophies, although our u14 town team won the ESFA North West Trophy that season, beating Salford SFA 1-0 in the final.

"The Salford team included future Wigan and Great Britain rugby league star, Denis Betts.

"In 1994 the u15s town team reached the ESFA Trophy semi-final and again were drawn to play Sheffield SFA, this time at Hillsborough, unfortunately going down 3-0 to a very strong Sheffield side which included Kevin Davies, who later went on to have a distinguished career with Wanderers.

"The BSFA team included Graham Allen (Mt St Josephs), who went on to play for Everton, and Ian Leather (St James’), who captained Bolton Wanderers reserves before becoming a legend at non-league Chorley FC."
