IT was a good weekend for Bolton Hockey Club, as the men’s first team, ladies' second team and Under-13s all won on their return to action after the festive break.

The men thrashed Wigan 4-1 away in a friendly which proved a good test for Sean McGovern’s side against higher-league opposition.

Bolton started brightly and deservedly went ahead just before the interval.

Danny Shaw played a defence-splitting pass into the path of Damien Pearce, who calmly slotted home from close range.

A quick counter-attack saw Rob Lord make it 2-0 shortly after the break, and Cooley put the outcome beyond doubt with a fine finish into the top corner.

Wigan pulled a goal back before Ritchie Turner skilfully lobbed the keeper late on to make it 4-1.

Bolton Ladies' second team put in a magnificent display to beat Urmston ladies 13-0 away.

Fiona Clarke opened the scoring before the floodgates opened with Viv Lake, Jess Hawkrigg and Clarke again among the scorers as the visitors built a 7-0 half-time lead.

Lake and Clarke finished with four and five goals, respectively, with Imogen Hall, Debbie Nicholson and Nicky Ashurst also on the scoresheet.

Dave Bainbridge’s young Bolton Beavers continued their impressive run of form, beating Sandbach 5-0 with an impressive hat-trick by Louis Bate and goals from Edward Lynch and Emma Begg.
