HORWICH Hockey Club ladies' first team showed why they are top of Greater Manchester League Division Two with a 6-0 destruction of bottom side Urmston second team.

The hosts dominated possession and piled on pressure from the start, opening the scoring after 10 minutes from Zoe Searson.

Helen Roocroft doubled the lead, tapping in a perfect pass from Zoe Bluer, and an Aimee Gilmore double made it 4-0 at half time.

Lara King Searson completed the rout in the second half.

Horwich, who were promoted to the division last season, are four points clear at the top with a game in hand and seven to play.

Horwich ladies' second team – who are fourth in Greater Manchester League Division Four, went down 1-0 at leaders Didsbury sixth team.

Some spectacular saves from Shannon Lesson in goal kept Horwich in the game in the first half, and, with nothing separating the sides, it was the home team who got the all-important breakthrough midway through the second half.

Third-bottom Horwich men's first team were well-beaten 5-1 at home to fourth-placed Urmston second team in the North West Hockey League Division Four North.

After going a goal behind, pressure from Tim Hayward on the wing paved the way for an equaliser when his neat pass into the D found Tony Sanderson who smashed home.

The hosts conceded before half time and imploded after the break when only a superb display by stand-in goalkeeper Paul Buckland prevented the margin of victory being greater.

Horwich men's second team were humbled 5-0 away to local rivals Bolton third team in North West Hockey League Division Six North.

After Adam Anwar went close and Dave Cheetham’s shot was saved off the line by the Bolton keeper’s quick reflexes, it was all one-way.
