BURNDEN’S Shay Walker scored his first victory in the club vest when he came home first in the Heaton Park 5k event at the weekend, finishing in 20mins 44secs.

Elsewhere, Jonathan Sangster led Burnden’s contingent across the finish line in the men’s race at the Northern Cross Country Championships in Pontefract.

Sangster completed the 12k course in 48:57, just nine seconds ahead of Paul Duke in 49:06.

Andy Staveley was next home in 52:41, followed by Keith Thomas (53:45), Tony Wall (57:45), Christophe Menand (59:32), Chris Greenall (62:37) and Ged Turner (63:19).

Anne Ferguson was the first to finish the women’s 8k race, crossing the line in 38:20, ahead of Louise Wall, who posted 47:49.

Fearsome windy conditions on the coast made the Lytham 10-mile race a testing challenge, with Jackie Oakes the first to get back safely, fifth F40 in a large field with a time of 1:20:42.

Phil Holden was next home in 1:29:54 followed by Denise Hodgkinson (1:33:21), Emma Walker (1:35:23) and Sarah Woodiwiss (1:36:52).

Debra Hennessey posted a time of 1:47:56 ahead of Wasyl Gelyczak and Peter Whiteside, who finished together in 1:57:55.

Gillian McGowan continued her comeback with 2:26:45.
