One of Bolton’s youngest sports stars is hoping to continue his stunning start to his fledgling karting career, writes Jamie Burns.

Six-year-old Joshua Lowe is taking part in the Indikart Bambinos 2019 Championship at Hooton Park in Cheshire and currently sits eight points clear at the top of the standings after three rounds.

Lowe, from Little Lever, is already no stranger to standing on top of the podium and mum Natalie could not be prouder of his achievements, having been behind the wheel for just a few months.

“As a family we have always been into motorsports and followed it regularly,” she said.

“The time came when, last year, we bought Joshua his first go-kart.

“We managed to get him a few races at the Daytona track in Manchester and he also took part at the TeamKarting track over in Rochdale.

“Considering he only started in January he has done amazingly really.

“He’s getting up to speeds of just short of 42mph and is looking really good on track.

“He’s just so comfortable behind the wheel.”

The St Matthew’s Primary School pupil has fellow Boltonian and 2012 BriSCA Formula One World Champion stock racing driver Lee Fairhurst to thank as his motivation for taking up the sport.

Natalie said: “Lee Fairhurst has been Joshua’s inspiration since day one and has always been a big influence.

“We regularly used to go to see his stock car racing.

“Joshua has always said he wants to be Lee when he grows up, but with Lewis Hamilton’s car instead!”

It’s not an easy pursuit for the family to finance though with support needed even at this early stage.

“It’s very expensive to be honest,” Natalie said.

“We’ve been trying to get sponsors for Joshua and have just managed to secure our first one and are grateful to Van Spijker Motorsport.”

The IndiKart Series takes place over 10 rounds, with the championship finale coming on Sunday, November 10.
