YOUNGSTERS competed with pensioners at Scalextric racing as part of an inter generational event this week.

The event held at Newport Market on Wednesday, May 29, is the third phase of the Welsh Government’s pioneering Strategy for Older People in Wales that aims to give older people a good quality of life.

The young people have also created a Timeline of Newport History and The Maxwell’s Beatles Tribute Band will perform while 60s memorabilia from the museum is on display along with showings of 1960s TV programmes and images.

Stalls representing older peoples’ organisations including Age Cymru, RVS Volunteering, and Care & Repair to provide information and advice while celebrating the contribution older people give to society.

The event was part of a series of regional events across Wales including Newport City Centre forms the basis of a 10-year action plan for Wales that aims to identify how public services will respond to meet the needs of our aging population.

Sandra Trimarco, strategy & event co-ordinator for Newport City Council, said: “The Gallery in the market came to life with an intergenerational event to mark the launch of the ‘Strategy for Older People in Wales’ and celebrate older people’s contribution to society.

“The young people displayed 60s toys and challenged old to a game of Scalextric.

“It was great to see the generations celebrating together.”
