Weightlifter wins medal on return from injury

6:14pm Friday 14th June 2013

WHAT is the most essential piece of kit in a Bolton weightlifting champion’s kitbag as he jets off around the world in the pursuit of becoming the world’s best ? Well, the answer is a bin bag. Joe Bullock , from Horwich, has just came third in the British Masters Championships and is currently in training for the World Competition in Orlando in October this year. But apart from packing his clothes, toothbrush and sun tan lotion, he explains how the bin bag has to be the first item in his case. The ex-St Joseph’s High School pupil said: “When I was competing in Henning in Denmark a couple of years ago there was an hour until the weigh-in and I found I needed to lose one and a half kilogrammes. “So I managed to grab a bin bag, put it under my clothes and then went on the exercise bicycle to try to sweat myself down to 93kg. “I managed to do it and then I re-hydrated by taking lots of an energy drink before the competition. “It was really touch and go and luckily on the day I managed to pull a personal best of 275kg and finished in second place. “It was a horrible feeling to think that I had gone over to Denmark and it would have been nothing because I could not compete.” Bullock’s recent success at the British Masters Championships comes after 12 months of pain for him. In June last year, the ex-Commonwealth 93kg Masters champion was in the final part of his regimes getting ready for the World Championships when he damaged his right bicep. It led to six weeks in a sling as well as a long spell on the sidelines after an operation. He said: “It is a quite common injury in the sport. “I was ranked in the top three with two weeks until the competition. “I thought that I had a good chance of a medal. “Then I was standing up doing some reps and the bicep tore. “I have been competing for more than 20 years and never had an injury like this before. “It was potentially career-ending. “I went for an operation and the surgeon did a great job. “I was so disappointed watching people compete because I thought that I had a good chance to win.” Bulloch admitted that he had some nerves about returning from the injury at the British Championships. He said: “All my hard work paid off and it felt great to finish third in the competition. “When I think about the injury that I got, it could have been a major one and ended my career so to come back and get third was amazing. “I have 15 weeks to get ready for the Worlds in Orlando and it would be great to be on the podium.” Bullock trains four times at the Adlington Barbell Club which has a reputation of attracting top weightlifters. The club was founded by Alan Fairclough who recently passed away and organisers are looking to hold a special event in his memory. It is going to be held in the Summer and early indications are that it will be a festival of the world’s best weightlifters and powerlifters in action. Among the big names include World’s Strongest Man winner Mark Felix.  z For more information about the event contact 07967112569.

Cormac 'Sales' to British glory

6:12pm Friday 14th June 2013

HEATON schoolboy Cormac Sale kept his guard to become the inaugural British under-10s fencing champion. Young Cormac, aged 10, of Old Kiln Lane, went through the entire British Youth Sabre Championships, held in Moulsford-upon-Thames in Oxfordshire, without losing a single match. The Rivington Park School pupil topped the qualification group and plotted his way through two eliminators, a quarter-final and semi-final before being crowned the first ever national champion in his age group. Cormac’s dad, Steven Sale, explained his young son’s incredible achievement was no shock to friends and family, despite coming just 18 months after he took up the sport. “Cormac was already the de facto national champion after winning the Leon Paul Junior Series under-9s title last year,” he said. “At the time, that was the only recognised national tournament in his age group, as this year was the first time they had held the British championships for under 10s. “He also went into the championships in a rich vein of form after winning his last three tournaments. “Before the British title, he won the latest event in the North West Junior Series, in Manchester, and the Durham leg of the under-10s Leon Paul series.” Cormac got into fencing after moving schools from Markland Hill to Rivington Park, where headmaster Michael Ruaux has run a fencing club for the past eight years. “He was already into football and badminton before moving to Rivington Park and, after the headmaster asked him to give fencing a go he just really took to it straight away,” said Mr Sale. “He loves to take part in competitions and when it came to fencing he just seemed to relish the competitive side of it.” Mr Ruaux added: “Cormac has a great ability for reading his opponent, which is a big part of our game. “Combined with sound technical ability, he is a formidable talent.”   Cormac followed up his individual title with a silver medal in the team championships, alongside a team-mate from Rivington Park, Nat Fidler, and a member of Camden Fencing Club. Mr Ruaux’s daughter, Emily, of Horwich, also claimed silver in the u18s British Sabre Championships. She is also targeting a place in the top 10 nationally.
