Otley’s town mayor will launch a new campaign to promote locally produced food and drink this weekend.

The town council and Otley Town Partnership have joined forces to create eye-catching leaflets and posters that will be used to publicise “the best locally produced food and drink in Otley”. From Field to Otley Folk will be officially unveiled at the Buttercross at 9am on Sunday during the Farmers Market.

The scheme sees participating businesses displaying posters featuring a variety of different images, ranging from tomatoes and eggs to pies and beer, while the leaflets will be sent to other towns and villages, too.

Work on it began after a report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England in 2012 showed that Otley’s local food economy generates £20 million of trade each year – but should be better promoted.

The Field to Otley Folk leaflet says: “Otley has a wealth of fantastic food outlets, from award-winning butchers and bakers to a specialist chocolatier and a wine merchant who stocks a wide range of locally brewed beers.

“In this leaflet you will find details of the many places within Otley that offer local produce. These businesses are sourcing as much of their produce as possible within a 50-mile radius of Otley, which guarantees our customers the best, freshest produce in the area.’”

The campaign’s logo is the word OTLEY spelt out using various kinds of food and drink.

The town council and town partnership are teaming up again, meanwhile, to hold Otley’s first ever Food and Drink Festival in July.

The event, featuring more than 50 stalls, will take place on Market Place and Boroughgate between 9am and 4pm on Sunday, July 28.

It will include wine and food tasting and displays by local brewers, cookery demonstrations and live music and entertainment.
