A PARRENTHORN High School leaver has been getting his hands dirty to create a new community garden.

Aaron Moss, aged 21, from Whitefield, is completing a Prince's Trust course part of which includes a community project.

This is the first such project to take place in Bury and is being completed in connection with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

He and 12 others have transformed a plot behind the new fire station in Magdalene Road, Fernhill into a new community garden.

While Mr Moss described the experience as "stressful" he was pleased with their efforts adding: "We’re going to have a vegetable patch, a sensory garden, a bee wall and a pizza oven.”

The back wall of the garden is near to a bee hive, inspiring the group to paint the wall to show the life cycle of a bee.

Mayor councillor Mike Connolly opened the garden to the public on Monday and the team members gave speeches and took the visitors around the garden explaining the work which went into each part of it.

Mr Moss added: "It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, we were all a bit nervous but, we're pretty happy with how it went."

The Prince's Trust programme is a 12 week personal development course for 16-25 year olds to help build their qualifications and prepare them for work.

The next stage of the Bury group's course will be to undertake a series of workshops to improve their interview skills.
