Sussex's Conservative MPs have been putting tens of thousands of pounds on expenses in the past few months alone.

Items range from claiming petrol and rail ticket costs to repayments on mortgages and even hundreds of pounds in advertising The Conservative party has published in full the expenses claimed by all its frontbench MPs for the past three months.

The report reveals none of Sussex’s nine Conservative MPs employ members of their own family. But it shows tens of thousands of pounds have been claimed on mortgage repayments and rent in the last three months alone, as well as thousands of pounds for travel – much of it on less environmentally friendly car travel instead of using the railways.

Greg Barker, the MP for Bexhill and Battle, spent more than £3,350 on phone bills. He also claimed more than £8,000 for his rent in just three months. Like most MPs, his car mileage claims of £749 far exceeded his rail ticket claims of £382.

Peter Bottomley, the MP for Worthing West, claimed just £80.20 for rail tickets but £1,520 in car mileage. He also spent £450 on his website and £3,150 on his mortgage repayments.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb claimed £2,403 on car mileage but did not make any claims for rail travel. He also put £5,675 of his expenses towards an interest-only mortgage.

Nick Herbert, the Arundel and South Downs MP, spent a similar amount on his interest-only mortgage at £5,680.05. East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton claimed interest of £3,086 on his mortgage, as well as repairs and utilities totalling £711. Car mileage ramped up a further £1,234.

Horsham MP Frances Maude was one of the lowest spending. His expenses claims included office rental of £1,575 and £460 for a website. He also claimed almost £5,400 for his interest-free mortgage.

Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames claimed almost £2,000 for office equipment in the three months, with a further £830 on phone bills and £313.77 on adverts for surgeries.

Andrew Tyrie, the MP for Chichester, spent more than £4,505.59 on management charges, the only Sussex Tory to do so.

Eastbourne’s MP, Nigel Waterson, spent £368 on insurance in three months and a similar amount on telephones. He also claimed more than £1,750 for petrol costs – more than £10 every day.
