Signage is to be installed on a street after an Asda lorry reversed into houses as it was trying to turn around in a bid to deter drivers from coming into the street.

Last month a lorry crashed into a row of houses after trying to turnaround, after, it is believed, he was wrongly directed by his sat nav.

The crash happened on Napier Drive, near the Middlebrook and Retail Leisure Park in Horwich.

Residents say that lorries are frequently directed up the cul-de-sac, and have to turn around.

Asda issued an apology the following day, saying they were working to help fix the damage.

Napier Drive is accessed via Aspinall Close from the direction of the Middlebrook Park. But there was not a ‘no through road’ sign at the Aspinall Close end.

There is, however, a no through road sign near to where bollards block off the north end of Napier Drive, making it a cul-de-sac.

Cllr Sue Baines of Horwich and Blackrod said: “There have been longstanding issues regarding vehicle access and indiscriminate parking on Napier Drive which I have worked to resolve since pre-Covid, and a TRO, which is a no through road sign, was agreed and unfortunately signage was misplaced.

“Senior officers are now going to reset the signage to the Aspinall Close end of the estate.

“However, the indiscriminate parking from employees on the Middlebrook site are still creating massive issues for residents despite my attempts to ask them not to park there.

“This is a separate issue and needs to be resolved and looked into further, which I intend to do with the help and support of those residents affected.”

Aleshea David, whose house was crashed into by the lorry, said:

“There should be a big sign at the bottom saying do not come up there. A fire engine came up here this morning.”

Regarding the moving of the sign, she said: “That’s good then, I’m not being funny it needs to be done, I don’t want it to happen again, it’s not been very nice so if it can stop lorries and trucks coming up then it’s good, 100 per cenet.

“If there’s no through road, there should be bigger signs everywhere so things like that don’t happen again. There’s kids here as well, it’s a little cul-de-sac.”
