The oldest rambling group in Bolton has unveiled a special plaque this month to mark its 100th anniverary.

The plaque which says “Still Walking” is located on a picnic bench on the Woodland Trusts land, Smithills estate, at Walker Fold.

Up to 62 members of the Bolton Holiday Fellowship Club watched as President Clive Atty gave a short talk about the history of the club.

Walkers then set off in four groups for separate walks for all abilities, to exercise and enjoy the countryside.

Club secretary and publicist, Elizabeth Burns, has been a member for seven years and says one of the reasons the club has been so successful is because it “bands people together, and there is something for everybody”.

She said: : “I think the thing that keeps me going on the clubs’ rambles is the fact that it combines physical and mental wellbeing, through fresh air, social interaction, and physical exertion.

“I am sure these three things have sustained the club over the years.”

There are a wide variety of walks each week on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Thursday evenings during the summer months, and is £12 a year to join.
