Frustrated motorists have hit out at roadworks causing long rush hour delays and claim they are leading to road rage.

The roadworks are part of an ongoing  project to create cycle lanes and junction improvements.

The traffic build-up was experienced on Bradford Street in both directions as m motorists attempted to come off St Peter’s Way compounded by the lane mergers caused by ongoing work on Manchester Road, Bolton.

Lane and road closures as months of roadworks set to start on busy Bolton town centre junction

Major Bolton town centre junction closures planned

One motorist said: It is ridiculous, you couldn’t move, it took longer to pass through that junction and the road works than it does for the rest of my journey from the other side of Bury to Bolton centre.

“There were lorries coming off the motorway and blocking the middle of the road so when the lights did change, no one could move.

“Motorists were also driving all the way up the right lane to Manchester Road, despite clear signs that it was merging into the left.

“It just caused chaos as drivers, who had been waiting in the queues, refused to let them into the merger lane.

“It’s frightening if you’re in a car and have a lorry trying to cut in front of you when there is no space to move.”

The ongoing £2.15m project is designed to link into the recently completed Cyclops, Cycle Optimised Protected Signals, and junction improvements at Bradford Street/ St Peters Way and Newport Street / Trinity Street.

The motorist added: “The whole 30 minutes I was stuck waiting there, I only saw two bikes go past in the cycle lanes.

"The first set of lights changed to green around six or seven times and no one passed them because you just couldn't move."

The work also includes resurfacing, repositioning of islands, traffic signal upgrades and other improvements.

The £2.15m project has been funded by the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal and is being delivered by Bolton Council and Transport for Greater Manchester as part of a set of wider highway improvements included within the Salford Bolton Network Improvement Programme.

The scheme aims to make the junction safer for all road users.
