A Bolton resident has spoken of the terrifying moment a fire broke out in her house.

Lucy Bentley, aged 23, was in her father's house on Highfield Road, Farnworth, when she could smell smoke coming from her room last night.

To her shock, her bedroom had set on fire.

Firefighters from Farnworth and Bolton Central fire stations attended the fire, which caused smoke damage to the house and destroyed Lucy’s room.

The house, which she lives in with her father and older sister and their dog, cat and snake, will now need a full revamp.

Lucy said: “It’s my dad’s house, he’s in Cornwall at the moment.

“We have no home insurance or anything, so we’re stuck now.

“The house is badly smoke damaged, everything is black. All the walls are black and my bedroom is gone.

“All the house, we have to do it all over again. It’s just going to be awful.

“That’s the last thing we ever needed, it’s taken everything.”

Lucy spoke about the firefighters, saying: “They were good, very, very helpful. As long as they stop the blaze properly I’m happy, and they definitely did that.

“I lit a candle and the lighter must have malfunctioned. I went out of my room and could smell smoke.

“I ran back upstairs and could see smoke coming out of my room. I opened the door and then closed it again, the room was engulfed.”

Lucy then got her sister out of the house, as well as their pet dog, cat, and snake.

She spoke on her father, saying: “He has has heart problems, so the fire is the last thing he needed.”

She added: “Just be careful, please be careful, because you don’t think it’s going to be you until it happens to you.”

Crew Manager Chris Spary at Farnworth Fire Station said earlier today:

“It was a fire that started in the bedroom, which was well developed with a lot of smoke showing on arrival.

“The property was heavily smoke damaged throughout. The bedroom where the fire started was completely destroyed.

“There was no structural damage, firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading.”
