Young people swapped the classroom for the boardroom.

Enterprising youngsters at Markland Hill Primary School have been learning all about the business world.

The school runs an entrepreneurs club for its Year Six children mand they took part in  make £5 grow, a scheme introduced by Virgin Money.

Budding entrepreneurs at the club spent five weeks planning their business ideas, which included learning important skills such as leadership, marketing and communication, among others.

The period finished with the children launching stalls at their Christmas fair, with the children selling a range of items including hot chocolate, Christmas ornaments and snacks, as well as guess the name of the Christmas elf.

The stalls that children designed raised a combined £272 in profit.

Markland Hill headteacher, Jessica Kavanagh, said: “At Markland-Hill we encourage our pupils to be leaders and participate in activities developing young citizens.

“The club was a huge success and we are very proud of their achievements.”

The club was held by teachers Sanah Khan and Sarah Stubbs.

Mrs Stubbs said: “The children have enjoyed taking part in the Virgin Money Make £5 Grow scheme. They worked incredibly hard to plan, create and sell their business ideas whilst having the opportunity to learn life-long skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and socialisation.

“It was rewarding to witness their success and see their hard work pay off. They made a huge profit of £272, we are extremely proud of them.

“On behalf of the children, we'd like to thank everyone involved.”

The school previously took part in a similar scheme last summer, where children worked towards selling their wares, including ice cream, mocktails and origami, at the summer fayre.
