A popular bar and grill had to close for a short period earlier today after a car caught fire outside.

The blaze occurred outside Henighans Bar & Grill, on Lever Street, Little Lever at around 5pm on Tuesday evening.

Owner Nick Howcroft explained that thankfully no one was hurt but that to ensure the safety of staff and customers the venue had to close for around 20 minutes while the fire was dealt with.

He said the car belonged to a regular customer and the car started smoking.

The car then caught fire and smoke began to billow outwards around the area, which could have spread had it gone unchecked, but fortunately emergency services were called and were on the scene within a matter of minutes.

Mr Howcroft, who also owns Henighans Eat and Drink in Breightmet has long been one of Bolton’s best known publicans and says that his customers and staff acted commendably in helping to resolve the incident and make sure that everyone was kept safe.

He said: “Our customers tried to help but the car was still burning.

“Firefighters were on the scene, it must have been in just seven or eight minutes, and they were really, really good.”

He added: “The important thing is that no one was injured and we managed to get the bar and grill open again by about half five.”

Henighans Bar and Grill is one of Little Lever’s most popular destinations who’s valued customers proved a great help to Mr Howcroft and his staff during the incident.

Mr Howcroft confirmed that the burned-out car would be taken away shortly afterwards, and that the venue was quickly able to get back to business as usual.
