Greenhalgh's managing director will be hanging up the apron this summer to walk 500 miles through Spain for a Bolton domestic abuse charity.

David Smart, from Bolton, is  taking on the Camino de Santiago hike for local domestic abuse charity, Fortalice.

On May 20, David will begin his journey walking through France and northern Spain climbing hills and covering a total of 500 miles before finishing at The Cathedral of Santiago.

His journey will take six weeks in total and along the way David will be joined by walking friends and his wife, but for the majority he will be walking this challenge alone.

David will be sharing on his YouTube challenge for supporters to see along the way @DavidSmartWalksCamino.

The route begins at St Jean, France and passes through areas of natural beauty such as Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon, Ponferrada, Sarria and finishing in Santiago.

David will be raising vital funds for Fortalice and he is asking everyone to support if they can so Fortalice can continue to serve the Bolton community with dignity and care.

David said: “This year I am beginning to take a little step back from Greenhalgh’s.

“I am fortunate to have such a supportive family who are very involved within the business allowing me to do so.

“With my extra time I wanted to combine my love for walking and support the local worthy charity Fortalice as individuals should not have to live in fear. I hope the people of Bolton support my challenge and donate no matter how big or small, thank you.”

Gill Smallwood, Chief Executive of Fortalice, said: “I am astounded by David’s upcoming challenge and so grateful for his support.

“This will make such a difference for our families; funding is particularly difficult at the moment and the community support is fantastic. Best of Luck to David, I cannot wait to see your journey!”
