Roadside speed checks have been carried out on two of Bolton's notorious roads.

Police were out and about on Moss Bank Way and Belmont Road over the weekend.

While there they monitored the flow of traffic and spotted a number of cars going over the speed limit.

A GMP spokesperson said: "A traffic offence report was issued to a driver driving at 38mph on Moss Bank Way and four traffic offence reports were issued to drivers driving at 45, 42, 39 and 38mph on Belmont Road."

Moss Bank Way has been the scene of a number of traffic incidents recently.

It moves to a lower speed limit of 30mph at one section of the road.

Earlier this year ward councillor Hilary Fairclough said the road would be looked at to see if collisions could be prevented.

The road leads onto Blackburn Road where there have been a number of collisions at the lights at the crossroads.

Last month emergency services were called in the early hours of the morning after a traffic light was knocked to the ground following a collision.

The road was cordoned off as a fire service unit made the scene safe.

Police launched Operation Portman in after concerns were raised after a number of serious incidents on the road.

In the first month after it was launched 564 motorists were reported, with the vast majority of these being for speeding incidents.

Earlier this year police launched a fresh crackdown on speeders after concerns were raised at a Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meeting before the Great Lever police neighbourhood team.

Police made a number of arrests in the Rumworth Area were using speed guns.

Following this police said they would be carrying out similar operations going forward.
