A Bolton holidaymaker says she had no choice but to stay at a Turkish airport for 24 hours with ‘little food and water’ following an air traffic control failure.

Jolene Heyes from Heaton says that she was initially meant to catch her flight from Dalaman Airport to Manchester Airport, at 1.40pm on Monday August 28.

However, she was not able to board the plane until 11am the next day, and the plane left at 12pm.

Despite the problem being resolved, the knock-on impact of aircraft and crew being out of position meant nearly 350 flights were cancelled on Tuesday and dozens on Wednesday.

Jolene said: “We are fully aware that air traffic control problems are not the fault of airlines.

“But people were asking for food and water as all we’d had in eight hours was water and a sandwich.

“Some people hadn’t eaten since breakfast at their hotel, as Dalaman Airport was so expensive.

“I know people are still stranded and compared to our experience, there may be worse.

“I also know that there are worse things happening in the world and many people are worse off, but I can only share my own experience.

“When your child is asleep on a hard airport floor because you’re being denied accommodation and there’s nothing you can do about it, it really isn’t nice.”

Jolene was also with her two children aged four, and 12, as well as six other family members.

When Jolene arrived at the airport and had gone through passport control and security, the gate number appeared, and she says they went to the gate.

She said: “Whilst at the gate, our boarding time passed.

“The screen still said, ‘go to gate’.

“We did not know what was happening.

“There were no reps to talk to.

“The Turkish airport staff stood around waiting like us.

“We were sat on the floor as the seats at the gate were taken.”

She said: “At 4.40pm we went to look for a rep so we could get some water, but there was nobody.

“Not one person came to tell us what was happening with our flight.

“We heard some people talking and they had seen on the internet about the air traffic control issues. “We were all panicked and unknowing.

“Over the next few hours, we saw passengers with other airlines leaving the airport to go to hotels.

“My sister flying with Corendon Airlines was delayed with us but flew to Gatwick a couple of hours later.

“When another flight left, we were able to sit on some benches after sitting on the floor for eight hours.”

Despite others going to hotels, Jolene says that they were not put in accommodation.

She says that although she was getting emails, since she was unable to access the internet, she only saw the first update on the screen at 12.55 am on Tuesday.

She added: “Children were crying, and people were exhausted so they started to lie on the floor and on the slatted benches.

“We waited and waited for a rep all afternoon, night and morning for anyone, to tell us what was happening, but nobody came.

“At 11am we finally boarded the plane.

“We were offered a complimentary bar but then things were limited, and we received one drink and one snack.

“This experience ruined a great holiday, and we are mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted.”

Jolene says that the situation became so bad that at one point “people were begging for water and asking for a water fountain”.
