A man from Bolton is set to appear on BBC’s Bargain Hunt.

Humayun Shouib applied to the programme alongside his Manchester-based friend Maisha Sorwar after seeing it advertised on an episode of the program.

While he can’t reveal whether he won, Humayun told The Bolton News about the ‘brilliant experience’ – and some of the details you won’t see on TV.

The popular daytime show sees two pairs of contestants buy antiques from shops with the aim of selling them for a profit at auction.

Humayun visited Bamford Auctioneers in Derby on Wednesday, February 7, to film his episode.

The Sharples resident revealed that there were 12 teams in total, with other episodes being filmed in the auction house at the same time, including two other contestants from Farnworth.

The 55-year-old said: “It was really good, the filming – it’s only on for an hour on TV, but the first lot of filming was for a full day, and the day I was there it was Storm Isha.

“We were filming outside and we absolutely got blown all over the place. It was a full day filming, there’s two episodes they film back-to-back.

“The second day was back-to-back filming, a full day again. In the auction, it’s quite slow on TV but it’s really, really fast. When you’re actually there you can’t even see what’s going on or work out what’s going on.

“We got to keep the jackets as well, we all got the jackets and extra stuff.”

Humayun explained why he applied to the programme.

He added: “I watch the program a lot, it’s one of them when you’re off on leave you watch it. I’ve watched it since David Dickinson used to do it a few years ago.

“I wanted to go on TV and I like the program, so I thought just for a laugh I’d apply for it. It was quite a quick turnover – some people wait six or 12 months, but ours’ was in weeks.”

Humayun also got the chance to meet host Danny Sebastian.

He said: “I thought he was from Yorkshire but he told me he was from Lancashire, so we had some banter there.

“He’s totally different in real life, he’s massive, he’s really tall.”

Humayun says he now wants to get back on TV.

He continued: “I’d like to go back, I’m trying to work out what – I’m 55 so I can’t go on Gladiators or anything like that, I’m going to try and work out what I can go on.

“It’s a brilliant experience, it really is. You see the kind of things you don’t see on TV, so much going on with the timescales, it’s quite tight timescales, and because it’s live in the auction, they can’t do re-takes for certain parts of it so you’ve got to get it spot on.

“Sometimes they could do re-takes at the market when you’re buying, but other elements you have to just go with the flow, it’s quite the experience which is good – so different.”

Humayun hasn’t yet been told when his episode will air, but has been told it will be broadcast at some point within the next two to six months, and he’s told he’ll be contacted two weeks beforehand.

Series 67 of Bargain Hunt is streaming on BBC iPlayer now.
