A heartbroken family grieving the death of a wife and mother, have suffered another devastating blow after a fire broke out at their home on Mother's Day.

Andrew Barton and his teenage children, Luke and Lorna, were at their Bromley Cross home when a blaze started downstairs on Sunday.

Lorna, aged 15, raised the alarm by screaming 'fire' to wake up her 17-year-old brother and her dad.  She managed to get downstairs, but Luke and Andrew became trapped upstairs with the smoke too thick for them to see through.

They were forced to jump out of a window, leaving Andrew with an injured ankle.

Emergency services were called and  the family were taken to hospital for breathing difficulties but discharged later.

Luke said: “I woke up to some banging downstairs and heard a crash and 10 seconds later my sister started screaming there was a fire and ran down and unlocked front door and got out.

“My dad and I tried but we could not see anything due to the smoke.

“Dad went in my sister’s room and shut the door then helped me out the window and I jumped, and then he followed me.

“I ran round to make sure my sister was alright, then the ambulance and fire came.”

The cause of the fire according to the family, was a battery charger plugged into the utility room.

Luke said: “I was just going off instincts and not really feeling anything and just doing what I could and thankful we got out alright, but it was a massive shock.

“Lorna is shaken up and dad really hurt his ankle jumping out the window but thankfully nobody else was injured.

“Lorna was already awake and called the fire, she saved us as two more minutes in bed and we would not have made it out.

“We are staying with family friends and have nowhere to live and living out of bags and had a rough 18 months as it is, but we always manage and always survive.”

Now friends and neighbours have set up a fundraiser to help the family.

Luke and Lorna’s mum died 18 months ago.

Luke said: “I am still processing it all and it is hard to put into words, but I am taking every day and moving forwards.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just before 9.15am on Sunday (March 10) four fire engines from Bolton Central, Bolton North, and Farnworth fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving the kitchen and utility room of a mid-terrace house on The Crescent, Bromley Cross.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire and make the area safe. Crews were in attendance for around two hours.”
