PARENTS of children due to start school in September have just two weeks left to apply for a place.

More than 1,200 online applications have already been received and many parents have completed a manual application form. But with an estimated 3,700 children expected to start reception class in 2013, many more parents still need to tell Wigan Council which school they’d like their child to attend.

Applications can be made online at Wigan Council’s website. Alternatively, paper forms are available. Parents must apply by January 15 or their application will be considered late and their child will be less likely to get a place at a school of their choice.

Every child living in Wigan Borough with a fourth birthday between September 1, 2012 and August 31, 2013 must apply for a place via the council - even if the child’s name has been registered with a school, has a place at the school’s nursery or they have a brother or sister already at the school.

Clr Susan Loudon, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The start of the New Year means there is now only a matter of days before the deadline passes for primary school applications. Parents really need to get their forms completed soon – if they haven’t already done so.

“I’m really pleased more than 1,200 people have filled out the online form so far. That shows it is simple and easy to use. If you need any help filling it in, council staff will be at the Grand Arcade on January 11 offering free support and guidance. I’d encourage everyone to make this a priority for 2013.”
