A MUM is facing a battle to make ends meet while she is treated for breast cancer.

June Moreland, from Lowton, was diagnosed in July after a routine mammogram revealed a lump in her breast and is currently undergoing chemotherapy to treat the aggressive form of cancer.

But the 53-year-old was shocked to discover that her entitlement to sick leave will run out at the end of the October, leaving her with just £87.50 a week to live off from statutory sick pay.

June, who worked in a call centre in Warrington, said: “I was devastated when I found out.

“I have worked since I was 16 without asking for help from the Government.

“I am shocked at how little they give to hard-working people who are in genuine need of assistance.

“Being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatment is enough without having to worry about financial difficulties.

“I was so shocked when the lump was discovered because I didn’t think I had anything at all. There is no history of breast cancer in my family.”

June’s daughter Michelle has organised a comedy fundraising night to try to raise awareness of the situation.

Comedians and MCs are giving their time to perform at the Daten Club in Culcheth on Saturday, November 2 to help June pay her mortgage and bills, while promoting the importance of breast cancer screening.

June said: “Mammograms are extremely important.

“The doctor said there was no way the lump could have been felt with normal examinations and I suffered no symptoms. It would have gone unnoticed.”

Michelle is hoping businesses will donate prizes for a countdown-style auction at the event and says wigs are mandatory on the night to ensure a lighter mood.

June added: “I am looking into financial help. The council will provide up to a maximum of 20 per cent off council tax and housing benefit will only help towards a small percentage of the mortgage once I have been on statutory sick pay for 13 weeks.

“I am halfway through chemotherapy and have to attend hospital every three weeks for the treatment. I hope to return to work at the end of January, after completing chemotherapy and radio therapy, all being well health-wise.

“Work have assured me about my job and will offer the hours I request upon my return.”

Tickets for the over 18s event are £4 and can be bought from The Daten or call Michelle on 07540 426559 or email michellelouisemoreland@gmail.com.
