THIS week we take a look back at the south shore of what is now Pennington Flash.
The photograph of two horses grazing was taken in 1955 by Leigh conservationist Tom Edmondson, who died last month. Leigh’s Tunnicliffe’s Mill, St Peter’s Church and Parsonage Colliery can be seen in the background.
The south shore had problems after this photograph was taken due to rubbish being tipped on the area up until the early 1970s.
Pressure from local conservationists resulted in the area becoming the now popular Pennington Flash Country Park, which opened on April 15, 1984.
