THE dedication of the new memorial garden added to Atherton Cenotaph will take place tomorrow, Wednesday.

The project, which has been organised by the Atherton Branches of the Royal Naval Association and the Royal British Legion, is due to be completed tomorrow after work commenced at the site, on the junction of Leigh Road and Hamilton Street, in August.

The memorial garden will be opened by Commander Harry Harley, from the Royal Naval Association at 1pm which will be followed by a short dedication service will be conducted by the Reverend Reg Sinclair of Atherton Parish Church.

The Royal British Legion will also launch their Poppy Appeal for 2016 from the garden which contains Atherton Cenotaph which lists the names of all the people from Atherton who died in the First and Second World Wars.

Money to help fund the project has come from the council's First World War Memorial Fund and Brighter Borough initiative and Groundwork.

The dedication will be attended by Leigh MP Andy Burnham, Lord Peter Smith, leader of Wigan Council, veterans associations and cadets.
