A GROUP of primary school children have been hailed a ‘credit to themselves, their parents and their teachers’ after shining in the Rotary Club of Leigh’s Let the Children Speak event.

Eight schools and 21 pupils took part in the public speaking in front of more than 100 people at Leigh Masonic Hall.

Pupils spoke for five minutes on a variety of subjects of their choosing, including endangered animals, rap song writing, holidays and planes.

One even wrote a song for the event and performed it a cappella.

Club president David Jones, who presented all the children with a trophy, said: “Being able to speak in public is an important asset and this event will have boosted the children’s confidence and raised their self-esteem, which will help them in all walks of life.

“The youngsters who entered this event should be proud. They spoke loudly and clearly and were also interesting and informative.

“They were a real credit to themselves, their parents and their teachers.”

The primary schools taking part were Leigh St Mary’s CE, Christ Church CE, Leigh Central, Westleigh Methodist, St Gabriel’s Catholic, Bickershaw CE, Sacred Heart Catholic and Twelve Apostles Catholic.

Rotary member and rugby league personality John Stringer was the master of ceremonies.
