A motorist who led police on a chase reaching speeds of 70mph in a residential area of Bolton has been jailed.

Carlos de Oliveira ended the chase on the street where he lived and was apprehended by the police.

Bolton Crown Court was told he was spotted by police in a Citroen Picasso at around 4pm on Sunday, February 5 on Chadwick Street, The Haulgh.

Police believed the vehicle was cloned and decided to follow the car.

The car drove on Wheatfield Street and Radcliffe Road but it was on Bradford Street that Oliveira sped away from the police.

The car hit speeds of 73mph on Long Lane and in footage shown to the court he forced other vehicles to take evasive action to get out of his way.

The chase came to an end on Brightmeadow Close.

Craig MacGregor, prosecuting, said: “Where the chase ended is the home address of the defendant, he lives there.

“The defendant was arrested 20 metres away, he had some cannabis on him.”

The court heard he had been banned from the roads for driving under the influence of drugs and was disqualified at the time of the offending.

Oliveira, 42, appeared in court to be sentenced after admitting dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without a licence and possession of cannabis.

Alex Beevers, defending, said he was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and this stemmed from the horrors he had seen while serving in the Portuguese marines during the conflict in Kosovo in the late 1990s.

He said this had contributed to his decision to flee from the police.

He argued that a suspended sentence could be imposed and said Oliveira had been out of trouble between 2006 and 2015 and again from 2015 to 2020.

But Recorder Neil Usher rejected this.

He said: “I reject the explanation.

“I am satisfied you knew you were a disqualified driver in possession of drugs and had no right to be behind the wheel.

“Appropriate punishment can only be achieved by an immediate custodial sentence.”

He jailed him for 14 months and banned him from the roads for five years and seven months and ordered him to pass an extended retest before he can drive again.
